How to Pick the Perfect Pillow
One of the most important parts to the bedding puzzle is your pillow. Fluffy? Soft? Memory foam? There are so many options, and choosing the best pillow for you can be an art. On a practical level, you want one that keeps your head, neck, and shoulders aligned, but how it feels to you is the best indicator. Use this handy guide to help find your perfect pillow.
All About Filling
The three main types of filling used for pillows are polyester, down, and memory foam. It is a good idea to try out these out, and it will give you a good idea of which you like best.
Polyester is the least expensive option. How tightly or loosely they are stuffed helps create a pillow that is more firm or more soft. These pillows are common and will be labeled from extra firm to extra soft, and hold their shape well for good support. They tend to wear out a little faster than memory foam or down, however the price difference can make up for that in terms of savings.
If you like that soft cradled feeling, you may like to try a feather filled down pillow. Any sharp points on the feathers have been removed, so there is no need to worry about getting poked or anything. There is an indicator called fill power that determines how plump and long the pillow will last. Down Alternative is an option if you suffer from allergies.
Memory foam has exploded in popularity in recent years, and these pillows are now widely available with many different shapes to cradle your head just the right way. The memory foam will spring back to its original shape when you get up, and the conforming nature is great for restless sleepers. The only downside is that they can be a bit on the expensive side.
The loft is the height of your pillow, and how you sleep can determine how much support you get. If you sleep on your back or your stomach you may want a flatter pillow so your neck isn’t craned awkwardly. If you are a stomach sleeper, you may want a pillow with more loft to fill the space between you head and shoulder so you stay aligned.
To choose the best size pillow for you, there are three important factors: how big is your bed, how many pillows do you need, and how will you use them. Pillow sizes correspond roughly to mattresses (standard, queen, king). That doesn’t mean you have to follow the rules however. It can be so fun and luxurious to have an oversized pillow all to yourself on a smaller bed. Or you could use layers of standard size pillows on a king size bed. You can have some that you use to prop yourself up for reading or watching TV
Whether you choose down, synthetic, or shredded foam, how it's packed makes a difference is the softness level. The more tightly packed, the firmer the pillow. Some people love soft pillows you can sink into, and even though some memory foam pillow have the soft sink-in feeling, the material used to make them is dense and it's just not the same as a down pillow. The best thing you can do is lay on a couple different types to see what your body says “yes” to.
