The Luxurious History of the Chaise Lounge (and why you should own one)

Posted by Mandi Bugatti on

What is a chaise lounge?

A chaise lounge refers to an upholstered chair long enough to put your feet up. Originally pronounced “shayz long”, the literal translation from French to English is “long chair.” The common pronunciation now includes the “ch-” sound. Unlike a daybed, which serves the dual function of sofa by day and bed by night, chaise lounges offer a position somewhere between sitting up and lying down.

The chaise lounge has been traditionally associated with therapy, as many psychoanalysts keep them in their offices, however the roots go back much further.

The first blend of chair and daybed began in Egypt, and many were made with palm sticks and rawhide. Archaeologists have unearthed designs for the affluent that utilized wood and ivory or ebony veneer.

In the 8th century BC, the Greeks changed the normal practice of sitting at a table to reclining on couches for their social gatherings of music and conversation. Reclining while dining was popular among the Romans as well. There was even a name for assuming this posture to eat: accubatio, the act of reclining at the table.

Today’s style of chaise lounge was popularized in France during the 16th century. They were specifically designed to allow French aristocrats lounge in the company of friends without having to go to the bedroom.

The Modern Chaise Lounge & Benefits

1. A chaise lounge added to a living room or bedroom today is seen as a luxurious piece than can add style and sophistication to a space. Designs range from modern and sleek to transitional with zebra print like the Prodigy Mink Chaise by Corinthian.

2. Many sectional sofas now include a chaise lounge, and it's a great spot that usually becomes the most coveted seat in the house. Some are ultra wide and allow for two people, or you can enjoy the whole space for yourself. The Garrett Sterling is an example of this type.

3. If you have guests over, it allows for 2-3 people to sit side by side like a sofa, making it a versatile piece of furniture. The Delta Implosion Sectional Sofa is a great example, and the back rest and pillows extend farther down the side for extra support.

4. Another convenient feature is if the sofa has a reversible chaise. This allows you to position the chaise portion on either side of the sofa depending on how your room is laid out, and you won’t have to specifically look for a right arm facing or left arm facing chaise. If you move in the future, and your space is laid out differently than your previous space, the sofa can more easily adapt to your new space. The Dante Dusk Sectional Sofa is one of our most popular for this reason.
