The Savvy Shopper's Bedspread Buying Guide

Posted by Mandi Bugatti on

Whether your style is modern or farmhouse, at some point you will choose what to put on the top layer of your bed. This category of top-layer bedding falls under the general name of bedspreads. In this guide we discuss the differences between quilts, comforters, duvets, coverlets, and bedspreads, and give the advantages of each type. Bedding can be a very personal decision, and this guide will help you make the best choice for you.

This is the most commonly available bed topper. They usually feature a decorative layer and may with coordinating accent pillows or shams. Comforters are filled with material, such as polyester batting, and are stitched together to be sure the fill is spread evenly and stays put.

Many stores that offer home goods will sell them with coordinating sheets called bed-in-a-bag which makes decorating easy. If you find a pattern or design that you really love, you can layer your comforter with a blanket underneath when the temperature drops.

Advantages: Comforters come in a variety of different weights, so you can find one that’s thicker or thinner depending on where you live and how hot or cool you sleep. Another advantage is that many comforters are machine washable, which makes them an “easy to care for” bedding option.

Duvet & Duvet Cover

A duvet is basically a comforter, usually white, and filled with down, feathers, or down alternative. The duvet is protected by a removable cover, the duvet cover, which has snaps, buttons, or ties to hold everything in place.

Duvets can be difficult to clean, and duvet covers protect it like a pillowcase protects a pillow. Making your bed becomes easier because duvets are a single covering and top sheets are not required. It may be a chore to put the duvet cover on, however for people that choose duvets, the advantages outweigh that concern.

Advantages: Duvet covers are less expensive than comforters. The covers are easier to launder, and they don’t take up as much space in your washing machine. With duvet covers, you can easily change the look and feel in your bedroom without having to redecorate.

Quilts consist of three layers: decorative top layer, batting, and a solid bottom layer all sewn together. Traditionally, the top layer of a quilt is handcrafted from many pieces of fabric stitched together in complex patterns. These quilts are made to commemorate graduations, marriages, new babies, and other life events. These require a little more care in the washing, and need to lay flat to dry, or taken to the dry cleaners.

Quilts are manufactured as well, and the complex designs may be printed or dyed onto the fabric. They work well with farmhouse, rustic, and shabby chic design styles.

Advantages: Quilts are usually made with cotton and cotton blends for softness. They can also be very warm and are great to snuggle in when it gets cold. The sentimental value and reminders of happy moments make them a great choice as well.

Coverlets are lightweight and designed to be used as a decorative top layer over other blankets or bedspreads. They are usually quilted or woven with an ornate quilt style stitch, but they are just one layer.

Many coverlets have coordinating pillow shams included. They work well in the summer months and can be used with other layers when it gets cooler. When washing your coverlet, be sure to dry on low heat and remove when it's still a bit damp to avoid shrinking.

Advantages: An easy way to change the look of your bedroom with one one purchase. Perfect for those who love layers, but hot sleepers can use it without layers to stay cool.

This is a somewhat retro type of bedding, but the chore of making the bed using a bedspread is very easy. Bedspreads are usually large enough to touch the floor, and there is extra material at the top to fold over the pillows. First, fold down the top edge of bedspread about a pillow width from the mattress edge and add the pillows on top of the fold. Then, pull the bedspread over the pillows.

Advantages: Making the bed with a bedspread is a breeze, and it has a very tidy look. Since it touches the floor, things can be stored under the bed without being seen. Great for guest rooms.
