The Savvy Shopper's Guide to Mattress Pads, Toppers, and Covers

Posted by Mandi Bugatti on

Terms like mattress pads and toppers are used interchangeably, and many people wonder what’s the difference and which one do I actually need? This guide will clear up the confusion and explain which one to use for your particular situation, as well as address specific questions.

Mattress Pads

Mattress Pads have a thin layer of padding on top with thinner sides that come down to hug the mattress like a fitted sheet. Others have elastic straps to anchor it to the mattress corners. These pads are designed to protect your mattress from stains, moisture, and general wear and tear. Many styles of mattress pads are machine washable.

Some mattress manufacturers will require them as a condition of their warranty. Mattress pads are typically made of quilted cotton or fabric padding as opposed to foam, and offer a smaller change in comfort than a mattress topper.

Mattress Toppers

A mattress topper is a layer of cushioned memory foam or latex placed on top of the mattress, and are typically 1-3 inches thick. They are added directly on top of the mattress and then covered with a fitted sheet, which holds it in place. Since mattress toppers are made of foam, they can offer a softer or more supportive feel, which can be helpful to those with back pain issues. They can also add a foam feel to a spring mattress.

There are a few potential drawbacks to a mattress topper. The foam is not as breathable and insulates body heat, which can be a disadvantage for “hot sleepers.” They are not machine washable, but they can be spot cleaned. Mattress toppers can be expensive depending on the materials used.

Mattress Covers

Also known as mattress protectors, these covers are made with a thin layer of cotton or polyester. They are designed to cover most of the mattress, and some enclose the entire mattress and close with a zipper.

There are several reasons to consider a mattress protector. If you are trying to prevent bed bugs, if you have a child with bedwetting issues, or if you live in a humid region and would like to prevent the excess moisture that may lead to mold.

What’s the difference?

Mattress pads protect your mattress from stains and wear and tear while offering a slight change in comfort. Mattress toppers are designed to change to the comfort level depending on the type of foam used. Mattress covers offer specific protection against bed bug and many are waterproof as well.

Can you use them together?

If you choose a mattress pad or cover, you can also use a mattress topper for extra comfort. Since they have different functions, there are no issues with combining these products.

Will a mattress topper help out an old mattress?

Most people find that a mattress topper can change the feel of a bed and enhance the level of comfort. Memory foam toppers have the highest ratings from people that said their sleep was improved. However, if you have indents or lots of sagging in your mattress, your money may be better spent on a new mattress.
